Allergies: What they are, causes, and how to manage them.

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can be found in the environment, food, or even medications.

What triggers an allergy?

When a person with allergies comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system identifies it as a threat and releases chemicals such as histamine. This response causes the common symptoms associated with allergic reactions.

Some of the most common allergens include:

• Pollen

• Dust mites

• Pet dander

• Certain foods (such as peanuts, shellfish, and milk)

• Insect stings

• Medications

Common symptoms

Allergy symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the reaction. The most common symptoms include:

• Frequent sneezing

• Nasal congestion

• Itchy eyes, nose, or skin

• Watery eyes

• Skin rashes

• Difficulty breathing (in more severe cases)

In serious situations, a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis may occur and requires immediate medical attention.

Types of allergies

There are several types of allergies, including:

Respiratory allergies: such as allergic rhinitis

Food allergies: reactions to specific foods

Skin allergies: such as dermatitis

Drug allergies: reactions to certain medications

How are allergies diagnosed?

Allergies are typically diagnosed by a healthcare professional through:

• Medical history evaluation

• Skin tests

• Blood tests

Identifying the allergen is key to effective treatment.

Treatment and prevention

While allergies may not always be cured, they can be effectively managed. Some recommendations include:

• Avoiding exposure to allergens

• Keeping living spaces clean and well-ventilated

• Using antihistamines or prescribed medications

• Considering immunotherapy in certain cases

When to see a doctor

You should seek medical attention if:

• Symptoms interfere with your daily life

• Symptoms do not improve with basic treatment

• You experience difficulty breathing

• You have a history of severe allergic reactions

Allergies are a common condition that can affect people of all ages. With proper diagnosis and management, individuals can lead a healthy and normal life.
