National Doctors’ Day: History and significance

Every March 30th, the United States celebrates National Doctors’ Day, a day dedicated to honoring the work, dedication, and compassion of physicians. But how did this special day come about?

National Doctors’ Day was first observed in 1933, thanks to the initiative of Dr. Eudora Brown Almond in Wofford, South Carolina. She proposed a day to recognize local doctors for their service to the community. The first celebration took place on March 30, 1933, coinciding with the anniversary of the first use of the stethoscope in the United States.

In 1958, the American Medical Association officially supported the idea of a national day to honor doctors. Later, in 1990, the United States Congress formally established March 30th as National Doctors’ Day, making it an official occasion to recognize healthcare professionals across the country.

This day symbolizes not only gratitude for medical care but also recognition of the compassion, sacrifice, and dedication that physicians demonstrate every day. Traditions include sending cards, giving flowers (especially red roses), and sharing messages of thanks with doctors in hospitals, clinics, and private practices.
